Bringing steroid hair testing back to Britain will save customers time and money
Cansford Laboratories announces that it is the first UK laboratory to offer steroid hair testing analysed here in the UK. With anabolic steroid use on the rise in the UK, an increasing number of family law cases are relying on steroid tests for evidence. With the well-documented psychological and emotional side effects of steroid abuse – aggressive behaviour, mood swings, manic behaviour, hallucinations and delusions – steroids are becoming a hot debate in family law and other individual behaviour cases.
Until now, all UK hair testing providers would send their tests to mainland Europe for steroid testing, Cansford Labs is proud to be the first testing lab to offer steroid testing at their UKAS-accredited lab here in the UK.
Hair testing is now an essential tool for family courts, employers, clinics, schools and government bodies to identify drug and alcohol problems in individuals and to establish patterns of use. Cansford Labs founders’ Dr Lolita Tsanaclis and John Wicks have been researching and working together since 1993, and pioneered hair testing for drug and alcohol abuse in the UK. The move into hair steroid testing is the next step into research and testing that Dr Tsanaclis and John have dedicated their lives to.
By bringing steroid hair testing to the UK mainland, Cansford Labs can reduce the turnaround time down to three days, compared to the typical 10 days – and reduces the cost by 60% when compared to other UK providers who send their samples abroad (figures correct as of 5 January 2017).
Whilst it is always good to save money, the more critical benefit is the time saved. The biggest application for steroid hair testing is child protection agencies including family law solicitors where potential steroid use, usually by the male, is a risk to the child due to the potential side effects of use.
While most UK-based labs send their samples to labs across Europe, Cansford can offer a quicker turnaround time – within our normal turnaround of a maximum of 3 days. This time saving can be crucial when a child’s welfare is at risk. We require considerably less hair than European labs that can be a big benefit in some cases.

Background to Steroid abuse in the UK
In 2015, the Crime Survey for England and Wales estimated that just under 60,000 people a year take anabolic steroids, although according to some, the number is likely to be much, much higher
Based on the evidence of local drug services the number could be as high as one million, according to Sky News.
While there are certain jobs that attract users – army, doormen, police – steroid abuse is not just limited to specific professions; usage is up nationally. An investigation by Good Morning Britain found the number of steroid users visiting one exchange clinic in Wales increased more than eightfold, from 269 to 2,161 in five years.
Individual seizures of steroids and other PIEDs (performance and image-enhancing drugs) increased by 35% in 2014 compared with the previous year, while the total number of doses rose by 70%, up from 1.5 million to 2.5 million doses.
There has also been a 50 per cent rise in calls to the Welsh Drug and Alcohol helpline about steroids over the same period.
Anabolic steroids are a prohibited Class C drug that can only be possessed and imported for personal use.
Cansford Labs is the first UK-based company to offer steroid testing in the UK: accurate, fast and cost-effective for family lawyers looking for results.
