What laboratory accreditation
should you look for?
Laboratories can claim to be accredited by a range of bodies, but some certifications are more relevant than others.
The ISO 17025 standard that Cansford Laboratories’ test processes meet is the most appropriate for UK drug and alcohol testing laboratories, and is awarded by the Government certification body, UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service).
It’s important to note, however, that ISO 17025 is awarded on a substance-by-substance basis. As such, a laboratory can claim ISO 17025 accreditation for their test processes, even for only one substance that it tests for.
When choosing your laboratory, use the UKAS schedule search tool to check that the company is accredited to test for a wide range of substances, including your target substance and the relevant metabolite.

ISO 17025
ISO 17025 addresses a laboratory’s ability to produce precise, accurate and reliable results. Laboratories are re-examined annually to assess:
The technical competency of staff;
The validity of their methods;
Traceability of measurements and calibrations to national standards;
Appropriate application of measurement uncertainty at cut-off levels;
Suitability, calibration and maintenance of test equipment;
Quality assurance of test, inspection or calibration data;
Customer service;
Adherence to continuous internal auditing, and;
Successful participation in Proficiency Testing
ISO 14001:2015
ISO 14001:2015 is in place to ensure our business operations:
Protect the environment by preventing or mitigating adverse environmental impacts
Mitigate the potential adverse effect of environmental conditions on our organisation
Fulfil compliance obligations
Enhance environmental performance

ISO 9001
ISO9001 is the internationally recognised standard for Quality Management. This new accreditation stands alone from ISO17025 (Laboratory) although 17025 does incorporate a lot of 9001.The benefits to Cansford and our clients are:

International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation scheme ILAC – Mutual Recognition Agreement – UKAS
Cansford has been evaluated by UKAS and deemed competent to sign an agreement which will enhance the acceptance of products and services across national and international borders.
It means that overseas firms and consumers who do business with Cansford in the future, can be reassured of:
Greater confidence and trust for businesses and consumers who depend on the accuracy of test, calibration and inspection
Know that facilities assessed through the scheme are competent to carry out these specific activities
By insisting that the calibration, test, or inspection results are from an accredited facility, they can be confident the facility has been assessed by an independent accreditation body, that itself has been recognised as meeting international standards of competence
Scientific Research
Dr Lolita Tsanaclis is a leading expert regarding hair strand testing, and has been awarded a certificate in recognition of her many years of reviews and papers from Forensic Science International (FSI).
